Accidents happen. We all know that, and have all been party to an accident of one kind or another, whether we were the injuring or injured party. I find a tender mercy in the Lord’s establishing the cities of refuge among the Children of Israel, to which those who had accidentally killed someone might flee and escape the ironclad laws of retribution which He also outlined in Leviticus. Those who had mistakenly killed could find a place to live and be safe even though circumstances were such that legally they could be executed. The Lord in His merciful Atonement will take away the consequences of our foolish mistakes and accidents as we follow Him and do His will. He has paid the price for such things, and offers us a very real refuge from the bitterness and retribution that otherwise would result from our actions.
